10 worst abusers attacked an average of 36 children each - Dublin Catholic Archdiocese report

Five of them have been convicted in the courts, three of which - along with two who have no convictions - are being supervised by the diocese.

Two of the ten have died.

The allegations date back as far as the 1940's.

The Annual Child Protection Update from Archdiocese of Dublin also states that half the allegations against a total of 98 of its priests relate to abuse alleged to have occurred in the 1960's and 70's, while one in three relate to the 1980's.

The latest data shows that in the past three years, 66 civil actions have been taken against seven priests, bringing the total number of cases to 199.

135 of these have been concluded and 64 are ongoing.

The total cost of settlements stands at €15.2 million, an increase of 38% on three years ago.

The total is made up of €10.3m in settlements and €4.9m in legal costs for both sides.

The Update also reports that last year almost 1,000 people participated in diocesan training and information sessions for the Safeguarding of Children.

It also reveals that, to date, the gardaí have vetted over 26,300 people associated with the Archdiocese - including bishops, priests, parish workers, Diocesan and agency staff, ancillary staff in schools and volunteers.

The Archdiocese said that in the past year complaints of child sexual abuse were reported against five of its priests, none of whom were the subjects of previous complaints.

It calculates that this brings to 98 the total number of priests against whom allegations relating to the past 70 years have been recorded.

This is less than one in 13 of priests who have served in the Archdiocese during that period.
