Minister: gay marriage not priority

A senior government minister has suggested that plans to legalise gay marriage should be stalled to let the Government focus on issues "that matter".

Gay marriage is "not the number one priority", Defence Secretary Philip Hammond told BBC1's The Andrew Marr Show on Sunday.

He said people are more concerned about jobs, economic growth and "the level of the wages they're earning".

The Government's plans to legalise same-sex marriage are open to public consultation until the end of this month.

He added: "I think that the Government has got to show over the next couple of years that it is focused on the things that matter to people in this country."
